9/1/15 – Early bird discounted registration deadline for the StrongWomen/Growing Stronger program starting on September 17, 4:45 – 5:45 PM, Pike County Administration Building, 506 Broad St, Milford PA 18337. The classes meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays September 17 – December 17 and consist of a nutrition lesson and 8-12 strength training exercises that help improve strength, balance, and flexibility. Fee: $90; discounted price of $80 if registered by September 1. Pre-registration, including payment and completed paperwork, is required. Final registration deadline is September 15. 9/1/15 – Managing Volunteers to Build Community Capacity: Tools for Effective Volunteer Programs, 1:00 – 4:00 PM, Penn State Worthington Scranton Campus, 120 Ridge View Drive, Dunmore, PA, PA 18512. Fee: $25. Volunteers are the lifeblood of many communities. The more people who volunteer in their communities, the more engaged residents become and community goals can be attained more easily. Learn how to: write complete task descriptions and how they can help with recruitment, training and evaluation; develop orientation and training programs that fit the needs of both the volunteers and your organization; identify risks to volunteers as well as your clientele and implement policies through training; and plan recognition that meets the needs of different volunteers within your organization’s budget. Fee: $5; children under 18 are free. Has the garden given you an abundance of veggies and you don’t want them to go to waste? Whether you are a beginner or have years of experience with home food preservation, preserving seasonal items can be a re-warding experience. In this how-to workshop, you will learn, through demonstration, how you may enjoy the harvest all year by safely canning extra produce. Pre-registration is required. 9/12/15 - Penn State Master Gardener Basic Training program, September 12, 2015 through March 12, 2016. Some sessions are done online, there are also hands-on sessions from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM at the Penn State Extension office, 724 Phillips Street, Suite 201, Stroudsburg, PA 18360-2224. Cost for the program is $150. Call Monroe Co Extension office at 570-421-6430 for details and an application. Applications must be postmarked by August 31, 2015. An interview will be required. Upon acceptance into the program, a check for registration must be received prior to the first class September 12, 2015.

Fee: $40 for 3-session course; incentive awarded to those who complete the entire course. Children reared in the Positive Parenting style exhibit positive self-concept, honesty, responsibility, compassion, problem-solving skills, self-control and acceptance of self and others.
