Out of the Darkness Community Walk 2013

Suicide affects our families, communities, schools, and the society-at-large. It touches the lives of survivors of that loss who must figure out how to go on.

That is why the Pike and Wayne Suicide Awareness Committee is holding the fourth annual Out of the Darkness Community Walk for Suicide Awareness and Prevention on Saturday, September 14 (rain or shine) in Promised Land State Park, Greentown, PA to raise money for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) and for local programs. Registration is at 8 a.m. and the walk begins at 9 a.m. It will be an awesome day of solidarity and caring. Participants can walk in teams or alone. Dogs are welcome, too.

The Pike and Wayne Suicide Awareness Committee is also looking for local sponsors and food donations for the event. Last year’s Community Walk raised over $9,000 when 128 walkers participated. You don’t have to wait to register and donate. You can do so now at (look for Pike and Wayne Community on the right side) or contact Linda Vose at or call her at 570-226-8702.

The Pike and Wayne Suicide Awareness Committee also sponsors monthly support groups for survivors of suicide loss. These groups, which provide positive support and education in coping with grief reactions, are for individuals who lost a family member, friend, or co-worker to suicide. They are run by trained AFSP facilitators who are themselves survivors of suicide loss.

A Survivors of Suicide Loss Support Group meets the fourth Wednesday of each month from 7-8:30 p.m. in Conference Room 3 at Wayne Memorial Hospital, 601 Park Street, Honesdale. Also available is the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-8255).
