Out of the Darkness Community Walk 2012

Milford, PA, July 27—Suicide is the third leading cause of death among teens and young adults, and the second leading cause of death for college students. Additionally, older Americans over the age of 65 account for 16 percent of all suicide deaths, according to American Foundation for Suicide Prevention statistics.

That is why the Pike and Wayne Suicide Awareness Committee is holding the third annual Out of the Darkness Community Walk for Suicide Awareness and Prevention on Saturday, September 15 (rain or shine) in Promised Land State Park, Greentown, PA to raise money for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) and for local programs. Registration is at 8 a.m. and the walk begins at 9 a.m. It will be an awesome day of solidarity and caring with participants walking in teams or alone. Dogs are welcome, too. The Pike and Wayne Suicide Awareness Committee is also looking for local sponsors and food donations for the event.

Last year’s Community Walk raised over $8,000 when 85 walkers participated. You can register for the walk and donate at outofthedarkness.org or contact Linda Vose at whrabbit3@aol.com or call her at 570-226-8702.

The Pike and Wayne Suicide Awareness Committee also sponsors monthly support groups in Pike and Wayne Counties for survivors of suicide loss. These groups, which provide positive support and education in coping with grief reactions, are for individuals who lost a family member, friend, or co-worker to suicide. They are run by trained AFSP facilitators who are themselves survivors of suicide loss.

The Wayne County Survivors of Suicide Loss Support Group meets the fourth Wednesday of each month from 7-8:30 p.m. in Conference Room 3 at Wayne Memorial Hospital, 601 Park Street, Honesdale, while the Pike County Survivors of Suicide Loss group meets the third Thursday of every month at 10 Buist Road, Building #2 (Wayne Memorial Hospital Outpatient Services).
