The Brass Comes to Town
Top Trombone Group Will Perform in Pike County
America's leading trombone group, the Guidonian Hand, will perform at the Milford Theatre on October 4th at 5:30 p.m. The concert is being produced by Kindred Spirits Arts Programs, which means children under 15 will be admitted free. (See below for details about buying tickets.)
Guidonian Hand gets its name from a medieval device that helped singers read music scores. Today's Guidonian Hand features top trombonists Mark Broschinsky, Will Lang, Sebastian Vera, and James Rogers, and it specializes in new music as well as the classics and features.
This means that in addition to all-trombone arrangements of works by Bach, Mozart, and Haydn, Guidonian Hand will play pieces such as Jeremy Howard Beck's Awakening, based on the shofar (ram's horn) used during observances of the Jewish new year. They'll also perform jazz legend Thelonius Monk's "'Round Midnight" in an arrangement by another jazz legend, trombonist Slide Hampton.
Between the four of them, the members of Guidonian Hand have worked with many of the top orchestras in the United States; as a group, they're appeared at major venues and festivals. "The Guidonian Hand transcends the limitations of the trombone by accepting them," says the great trombonist, composer, and educator Sam Burtis. "[They perform] architecturally sound new music using everything of which the trombone is capable. Brilliant writing, brilliant playing: loose yet precise. A celebration of pure sound, and played from the heart at a very high level....Go hear it."
