Capitol Christmas Tree to Stop at Grey Towers En Route from Colorado to Washington, DC

MILFORD, PA - The tree that stands in front of the US Capitol Building in Washington, DC, during the holiday season will be stopping at Grey Towers National Historic Site, Milford, PA, on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012 on its way from Colorado to our nation’s capital.

Chosen from the White River National Forest high atop the Rocky Mountains, the tree, known as the US Capitol Christmas Tree or the “people’s tree,” will make a brief stop at the ancestral home of Gifford Pinchot, founder and first chief of the US Forest Service, so the community can help celebrate this annual gift to Americans.

Each year a tree is selected from one of the country’s national forests. US Forest Service officials select a number of suitable trees and the final selection is made by the Architect of the Capitol. Once cut, Colorado’s gift to the country will be wrapped up on a flatbed truck and begin its journey across the country, stopping at various towns along the route on its way to Washington, DC. These stops allow citizens from all across the US to enjoy the tree, even if they cannot make it to the Capitol Building.

The entourage is expected to arrive at Grey Towers on Saturday, Nov. 24. At 3 pm, the US Forest Service will open the first floor of the Pinchot mansion for visitors to walk through and enjoy the holiday decorations. Free refreshments will be served. The tree and accompanying exhibits, companion trees and Santa and Mrs. Claus will be available from 4:30-5:30 pm.

You can track the tree’s progress across the nation by visiting or on Facebook at or Twitter: @CapitolTree2012.
