5/13/15 – First of 8 session Freedom From Smoking course, 4:00 – 5:00 PM, Blooming Grove Senior Center, 150 Pike County Blvd, Lords Valley, PA 18428. Meeting dates are: May 13, 20, 27, 29, June 3, 10, 17, 24. Cost: $40 for 8 classes; ask about incentives. Freedom from Smoking will help you accomplish your goals with a supportive, structured step-by-step plan. Pre-registration, including payment, is required by May 11. This session describes techniques for reducing stress, taking personal responsibility for improving your physical and emotional well-being, and avoiding pitfalls, such as unhealthy eating. Participants will learn about the many factors that can affect a child’s behavior. They will learn to observe and problem solve to modify the behavior. The presenter is Rob Berghage, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Horticulture, Director of the center for Green Roof Research, Penn State University. As we continue to change our landscapes, converting fields and forests to buildings, parking lots and lawns, we fragment forests and other productive landscapes and impact our streams, lakes and rivers with polluted stormwater runoff. Learn how Green Infrastructure is helping to conserve viable natural resources and capture, infiltrate and evapotranspire rain where it falls. Green Infrastructure improves both the quality of life and environment in our communities.

5/20/15 – Land Use Decision-making webinar, 12:00 -1:15 PM (EDT/EST). The topic is Agri-Tourism Issues for PA Communities. A popular and growing opportunity for agricultural producers is agritourism. Agritourism is generally defined as activities that include visiting a working farm or any agricultural, horticultural or agribusiness operation to enjoy, be educated or be involved in what is happening at that locale. However, planning for agritourism requires a forward-thinking, locally-driven process. Planners must acknowledge agriculture as both a land use and a business. This webinar will explore the challenges this mixed-use creates.

This is the last in a series of 5 webinars for Winter/Spring 2015. They are designed to help planners, elected officials and citizens better engage in land use decision-making processes. Volunteers are the lifeblood of many communities. The more people who volunteer in their communities, the more engaged residents become and community goals can be attained more easily. Learn how to: write complete task descriptions and how they can help with recruitment, training and evaluation; develop orientation and training programs that fit the needs of both the volunteers and your organization; identify risks to volunteers as well as your clientele and implement policies through training; and plan recognition that meets the needs of different volunteers within your organization’s budget. Dawn Marie has created a special menu! 4-H Knitting Club members may choose from several flavors of smoothies or juices. Refreshments will be paid for 4-H Knitting Club members with funds gained from our participation at TSC Paper Clover days, last fall. Adults, family members and people interested in the 4-H program are welcome to attend, order from the regular menu, and be responsible for payment of your own refreshments. Please provide your own transportation to and fro.
