This course introduces the learner to evidence based literacy practices, activities, and materials that support literacy development birth through early school-age.

Participants will learn strategies to promote literacy learning using interest-based and highly engaging activities, using the NAEYC Position Statement Learning to Read and Write: Developmentally Appropriate Practices as the guiding principle. This course will help you name and define the components of early literacy development, identify evidence based strategies for supporting early literacy development, and list developmentally appropriate early literacy activities for children birth through young school-age. Participants will self-assess their own program to identify welcoming/unwelcoming messages in their environment and written policies. Using strategies acquired throughout the course, participants will develop an action plan to increase welcoming messages in their programs. This course will help you describe practices that say "welcome" to all families, identify non-welcoming practices in your program, and develop strategies that intentionally include all families.
