8/1/16 – ServSafe Food Safety Management Certification Course, August 1 (9:00 AM - 4:00 PM) and August 8 (9:00 AM – 12:00 PM; exam begins at 1:00 PM), Penn State Worthington Campus, 120 Ridgeview Dr, Room Dawson 123, Dunmore, PA 18515. Fee: $185. This course uses the National Restaurant Association (NRA) food safety curriculum for food service establishments. Training meets the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture requirements for the Food Employee Certification Act. Pre-registration is required by July 27. 8/9/16 – The Center for Dairy Excellence and Penn State Extension Dairy Team are hosting a “Facilitator Focus Group” webinar on August 9, 7:00 – 8:00 PM, to gain input on the 2016-17 On-Farm Dairy Profit Team Program. Anyone who facilitates some type of on-farm team is encouraged to attend, regardless of whether that team is enrolled in the Center for Dairy Excellence team resource program.

The webinar is intended to gather input on how to increase the value the team resources provide to the farms and engage more farms in leveraging the program to benefit their operations. Questions will be asked regarding training requirements, industry involvement, support levels and access to additional resources. 8/13/16 – Composting Campers, August 13, 6:00 PM, Hickory Run State Park Outdoor Amphitheatre, 3613 State Route 534, White Haven, PA 18661. Free to the general public as well as campers; just bring a contribution to the compost pile we will build. Register at the program to win a free Compost Bin. In partnership with the Pennsylvania DCNR Hickory Run State Park Educational Outreach Program, Composting Campers is “fun with a purpose.” Upon registration campers receive an educational list of compostable items and collection bags for food scraps which they then bring to Saturday night campfire. At campfire folk musician Tom Storm entertains with historical ballads and the kids get excited as Roberta dressed as a giant microbe gears them up for building a compost pile. Kids and parents alike learn the microbe’s favorite foods, climate, and the value of compost as the collected goodies are added to the pile. Then it’s time for s'mores with more folk music. 8/14/16 – How to Create a Successful Community Garden, August 14, 2:00 – 2:30 PM, Bryant Park, corner of Bryant Street and Park Avenue, Stroudsburg PA 18360. Do you have an eyesore property in your neighborhood that you would like to convert to a public park? In this presentation learn the process of creating a community garden from idea to completion. We will gather for inspiration at the Bryant Park pocket garden that is tended by the community. If you build it, they will come! 8/14/16 – Garden Soil - Don’t Treat It Like Dirt!, August 14, 2:30 – 3:00 PM, Bryant Park, corner of Bryant Street and Park Avenue, Stroudsburg PA 18360. Healthy soil = healthy plants. Ok, but how do you know if your soil is healthy? In this presentation you will learn how soil works and discover what your soil needs. Soil testing will reveal ways to improve the quality of your garden soil. We will focus on understanding and interpreting the recommendations of soil testing as well as other do-it-yourself methods that will yield the healthy plants that we desire.
