The Newman and Oltman Guitar Duo Plays Grey Towers
As part of the lead-up to the 50th anniversary of Grey Towers' designation as a National Historic Site, the popular Newman and Oltman Guitar Duo will present a concert at this former Pinchot family estate on August 17th. Tickets for the concert, which will begin 5:30 p.m., cost $20 at the door or $15 when bought in advance (see below for details); children under 15 are admitted free.
While serving as ensemble-in-residence at New York City's Mannes College of Music for the past 25 years, Michael Newman and Laura Oltman have made more than a dozen recordings and won rave reviews at Carnegie Hall, the Caramoor Festival, and other major venues in North America. The guitar duo has earned ovations throughout Europe, too, as well as Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, South Africa, and the South Pacific.
Not only does the "Classics New and Old" program spotlight Newman and Oltman's "rare prowess" and "welcome sense of dynamic contrast" (The Los Angeles Times) as guitarists; it also showcases their ability to bring out the best in both time-honored classics and modern music. At Grey Towers they'll play classics by Piazzolla, Albeniz and Giuliani -- the 19th-century composer, not the mayor -- as well as modern guitar music they have commissioned, including "Raritan Triptych" and "No Feathers on this Frog."
Tickets for the Grey Towers concert at 5:30 p.m. on August 17th cost $20 at the gate or $15 when purchased in advance on the Kindred Spirits Arts Programs website, http://kindredspiritsarts.org/. The public can also buy tickets at Books and Prints at Pear Alley, 220 Broad Street, Milford. Children under 15 are admitted free.
