Lyme Disease Awareness in Forest City April 21st
Statistics are staggering! According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website www.cdc.gov data from 2014 indicates 96 percent of confirmed Lyme disease cases were reported from only 14 states nationwide. Of those 14, Pennsylvania had the highest number with 6,470 confirmed and another 1,017 cases listed as “probable”.
“Lyme disease is very prevalent in the northeast,” stated Walter Dobushak, DO, board certified family physician at McAndrew Family Health Center in Vandling, part of Wayne Memorial Community Health Centers. “I’ve treated hundreds of cases when I was practicing in New York and I’m also seeing cases here.”
On Thursday, April 21, Dr. Dobushak will share his experience with Lyme disease through a program intended to increase the community’s awareness of the illness. The program will be held at the Forest City Area Emergency Services building, 380 Railroad Street, Forest City, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for the general public as well as area EMS professionals. Topics covered will include: history of Lyme disease; caution in removing ticks; symptoms; current treatment and best line of defense based on CDC recommendations. Refreshments will be served.
Prior to becoming the full-time family physician at the McAndrew Family Health Center in April of 2015, Dr. Dobushak maintained a private family practice in Kerhonkson, NY for more than 37 years. He also served as a consultant to the Public Health Department for Ulster County, NY. In that role, he focused on research and epidemiology regarding infectious diseases including West Nile Virus and Lyme disease.
The Lyme Disease Awareness Program is free to the public and no reservations are required. For more information, call Wayne Memorial Public Relations Department at 570-253-8390.
