Fee: $30; discounted price of $25 if registered by April 1. Optional lunch is an additional $9. Dreaming of Spring? Join the Penn State Master Gardeners of Pike County for GardenFest 2015 to get inspired and learn how to grow your greatest garden yet! This one-day event will arm you with everything you need to get your garden into shape. The keynote topic is Adapting to a Changing Environment and Landscape. Fee: $7. Part one of a two part series. Participants will share, discuss and implement best practices to develop and strengthen relationships. 4/11/15 – It's Time to Plant!, 1:00 – 3:00 PM, Carbon County Environmental Education Center, 151 East White Bear Drive, Summit Hill, PA 18250. Fee: $8. Carbon County Master Gardeners will teach you best practices for preparing your soil, composting, mulching, companion planting, growing herbs, gardening for bees and butterflies, and attracting birds. Plant your own herb seeds in newspaper pots. Participants will learn how to take care of them and when to plant them outside. If you are concerned with saving the Monarch butterfly, take home some milkweed seeds offered free by Bear Mountain Butterflies. We will also have free information sheets on all our topics, free consultations with our Master Gardeners, and a free walking tour of the 14 acre organic farm. The registration deadline is April 8. 4/13/15 – Free Penn State Extension Green Infrastructure webinar, 12:00 - 1:00 PM (EDT/EST). The topic is Penn State Center’s Stormwater Mitigation Initiatives in Pittsburgh. The presenter is Lisa Kunst Vavro, RLA, ASLA, Sustainable Environments Manager, The Penn State Center in Pittsburgh. As we continue to change our landscapes, converting fields and forests to buildings, parking lots and lawns, we fragment forests and other productive landscapes and impact our streams, lakes and rivers with polluted stormwater runoff. Learn how Green Infrastructure is helping to conserve viable natural resources and capture, infiltrate and evapotranspire rain where it falls. 4/14/15 – Technology Tuesdays: Restraint & Handling of Dairy Cattle free online workshop, 8:30 -10:00 AM (EDT/EST). This is part of a series that includes presentations on dairy farm facilities design, dairy cattle behavior, nutrition, financing and labor. Dairy cattle need to be isolated and restrained regularly for a number of reasons including observation, health care and breeding. These procedures must be done easily, safely, and without excitement. Presentation topics include access and restraint requirements, sorting and isolation options, and proven restraint methods used for dairy cows and heifers. Fee: $7. IPM is an alternative method of insect control that incorporates common sense practices. 4/14/15 – Childcare Provider Workshop: Assessing Your Classroom for Deeper Literacy Learning, 6:30 – 8:30 PM, Emergency Management Bldg, 1264 Emergency Lane, Nesquehoning, PA 18240. Fee: $7. This workshop will focus on building a better literacy environment. Would you like to build a better literacy environment? What does it mean to have a "literacy rich" classroom? Is having sufficient books and materials enough to support a child's developing literacy skills? This class takes assessment of the classroom environment and practices to the next level, introducing the learner to the interactions that are necessary to support emergent literacy skills. Participants will conduct a self-assessment of their classroom environment, literacy practices, and interactions that support literacy development and learn ways to engage children in deeper conversations and interactions that support literacy development Pre-registration, including payment, is required by April 10. 4/15/15 – Land Use Decision-making webinar, 12:00 -1:15 PM (EDT/EST). The topic is All About Open Space – Owning and Managing Natural Lands. Municipal officials, developers and planners often find themselves faced with opportunities and requests to own open space, and are then faced with the question -- “how will it be cared for and maintained?” This webinar describes practical methods for managing natural areas, whether public parkland, residual parcels left undeveloped during the municipality's build-out process, or planned open space and naturalized areas for stormwater management and conservation subdivisions. Learn how Act 115 of 2013 has improved Pennsylvania’s open space law, allowing some revenue acquired with a dedicated open space tax to be used for the maintenance and best utilization of open spaces. This webinar will also cover how land use codes can ensure permanent protection and best management for these undeveloped places. This is the fourth in a series of 5 webinars for Winter/Spring 2015. They are designed to help planners, elected officials and citizens better engage in land use decision-making processes.
