April 2013 NewsFlash

Safe Haven of Pike County, Inc. proudly announces the return of our Sexual Assault Awareness Month campaign for April 2013. This effort, which the agency calls “A Revolution of Hope & Healing,” incorporates community outreach, professional training, and family-friendly events to send a clear message to Pike County that our community supports victims/survivors of sexual assault. Last year’s campaign included a child safety fair, a two-part training series for local professionals, significant outreach via the press, two fundraisers, two youth-focused events, and more. Thanks to the generosity of the campaign’s sponsors most of these events—which reached approximately 7,000 Pike County residents last year—were free to the public.

Safe Haven expects the 2013 campaign to reach even greater numbers. The month-long outreach begins on Wednesday, April 3, 2013, with a proclamation at the 9:00 a.m. meeting of the Pike County Commissioners. Following the meeting, Safe Haven’s Executive Director David Bever will conduct a press conference on sexual assault in our community in the Commissioners’ Meeting Room in the Pike County Administrative Offices located at 506 Broad Street, Milford, PA. The public is invited to attend this forum, which will commence the month-long awareness campaign of events open to the public, which include:

• Women’s Empowerment Community Art Project (April 13, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., at The Pike County Courthouse, 410 Broad Street, Milford, PA)
• 2nd Annual Child Safety Fair (April 21, St. Vincent de Paul Parish Hall, 101 St. Vincent Drive, Milford, PA)
• Inter-Faith Prayer Breakfast to Honor Victims & Survivors of Sexual Assault (April 29, 7:30 a.m., Mt. Haven Resort & Restaurant, 108 Mt. Haven Drive, Milford, PA)
• Clothesline Project: T-Shirts designed by survivors, to be displayed at Safe Haven (Month-long, Safe Haven of Pike County, 500 West Harford Street, Milford, PA)
• Informative Tabletop Displays/Community Presentations (Various locations throughout April)

“A Revolution of Hope & Healing” 2013 will also include training for criminal justice professionals on this critical issue. All of these events listed above are free to the public, with the exception of the April 29 prayer breakfast; participants will purchase their breakfast directly from Mt. Haven Resort & Restaurant.

Safe Haven thanks our sponsors for this critical outreach effort, they are: The Dime Bank, Susan Hines/Guaranteed Rate Mortgage, Newton Medical Center, The Pike County Bar Association, Tri-County ENT, Tina and Jerry Vesely, Dr. & Mrs. Albert Waldman, Wayne Bank, and Wells Fargo Bank.

Awareness is the key to prevention. For more information about these events, or if you might be interested in sponsoring this important outreach, please contact Safe Haven of Pike County at (570) 296-2827.
