iCARE an Upper Delaware GLBT Center Education Initiative Premiers a Series of Workshops
The Upper Delaware GLBT Center (UDGLBT) is proud to present a series of workshops to be held at the UDGLBT Center located at 201 W. Harford St., Milford, PA beginning on Tuesday, March 26th at 7:30pm. This series of workshops is part of the UDGLBT’s education initiative, Increasing Community Awareness through Relevant Education (iCARE).
iCARE will sponsor workshops on various Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual, Transgender and Queer (GLBTQ) related topics. “We are excited to offer programs that will increase awareness and promote understanding – we believe through education we will dispel misconceptions and create a united community that embraces diversity,” said Patty Tomaszewski, UDGLBT, Executive Director. iCARE programs are free and open to the public.
The initial schedule is as follows:
Tuesday, April 16: Coming Out – The process of coming out about one’s sexual orientation and/or gender identity is often difficult. This workshop will explore the coming out process and provide some helpful things to consider when thinking about coming out. It will also help those wondering what to do or how to respond when someone comes out to you.
Tuesday, April 30: Equality – LGBT individuals do not have many of the same right as their heterosexual peers, nor are they afforded the same protection under many laws. This session will examine some of the inequalities that exist.
Tuesday, May 7: Bullying – LGBTQ youth are at highest risk of bullying yet are offered the least protection and support. This session will focus on some of the unique challenges LGBTQ youth face. Cyber bullying, as well as other forms of bullying will be discussed.
The initial iCARE workshop, a Community Forum on HIV Criminalization, was a huge success.
Anyone who knows or cares about LGBT individuals and is interested in learning more about LGBT issues or creating a welcoming environment for the GLBTQ community should attend. Individuals involved with GLBTQ youth including teachers, parents and families are strongly encouraged to attend.
